A note about our programs
We hold most programs rain, snow, or shine, unless we notify you otherwise. If you cancel your registration seven days or more prior to the program date, we’ll refund your fee in full. If you cancel within seven days of the program date, we are unable to refund your fee. If the Foundation of the State Arboretum cancels a program for any reason, we will refund your fee in full. Advance registration is required for all programs. Space is limited.

The Butterflies in Your Backyard

10:00-11:30 | Saturday, August 27th

We will begin with an illustrated talk on Virginia butterflies, including life cycle, ecology, and identification. We’ll then look for butterflies in Blandy’s gardens. Led by insect scientist and Virginia Master Naturalist Alex Newhart!

What to expect: An indoor talk followed by an outdoor butterfly safari. 

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 6 and up.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Where to meet: Meet at the library at the Quarters building.

COVID-19 Information: Portions of this program will be held indoors and outdoors. Masks are optional.

SOLD OUT! Pawpaws: Appalachia’s Forgotten Fruit

1:00-2:30 |  Saturday, September 10th

Ever tried a pawpaw? Learn about the natural history and folk value of this quirky Appalachian fruit, then visit a pawpaw patch to collect and sample this tasty fall treat. Led by Blandy's Assistant Curator for the Native Plant Trail Jack Monsted.

What to expect: A talk about pawpaws followed by a walk to see pawpaws "in the wild" in Blandy's back woodlot. We may venture a short distance off the trail to find pawpaws trees with fruit. 

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 8 and up.

What to bring: Bring a full water bottle, dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tick repellent reccomended. 

Where to meet: Meet at the flagpole at the front parking lot close to the “Arboretum Information” kiosk.

Explore the arboretum at night on a guided nature walk. Who knows what we’ll discover?

What to expect: We will walk about a mile over gently rolling terrain in variable light conditions.

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 5 and up.

What to bring: Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight if you wish.

Where to meet: Meet at the flagpole at the front parking lot close to the “Arboretum Information”kiosk.

COVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors. Masks are optional.

Late September/early October is close to the peak of fall songbird migration. Join Blandy Director and birding enthusiast Dr. Dave Carr in search of southbound warblers, vireos, hawks, and more!

What to expect: We will walk about a mile over gently rolling terrain.

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 12 and up.

What to bring: Dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes that can withstand a bit of early morning dew on the grass. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from Blandy.

Where to meet: Meet at the flagpole at the front parking lot close to the “Arboretum Information” kiosk.

COVID-19 Information: This program will be entirely outdoors. Masks are optional.

Nature Safari- Native Plant Meadow!

2:00-3:00 PM | Saturday, October 1st 

Who lives in the meadow? In this family-friendly program, you’ll learn all about this unique ecosystem and the amazing adaptations of the plants and animals who live there.

What to expect: A nature walk (~0.3 miles). We’ll do a few short activities along the way.

Who can come: All ages.

What to bring: Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a full water bottle. 

Where to meet: Meet at the flagpole at the front parking lot close to the “Arboretum Information” kiosk.

Wild Virginia! With the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

7:00 - 8:00 PM | Saturday, October 15th 

In this family-friendly program, you'll get up close and personal with your wild neighbors and learn all about their natural history. This program focuses on animals that live here in Virginia and interesting facts and stories about their lives. Animal guests may include: fox, skunk, opossum, squirrel, bat, snake, turtle, raptor.

What to expect: An indoor talk featuring live animals, led by the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. 

Who can come: All ages!

Where to meet: Meet at the library at the Quarters building. Signs will direct you from the main parking lot to the library. 

COVID-19 Information: This program will be held entirely indoors. Masks are optional.

Winter Migrants Bird Walk

8:00-10:00 AM | Friday, October 21st

Around this time of year, birds from northern forests fly south in search of overwintering grounds. Join Blandy Director and birding enthusiast Dr. Dave Carr in search of juncos, sparrows, finches, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and more!

What to expect: We will walk about a mile over gently rolling terrain.

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 12 and up.

What to bring: Dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes that can withstand a bit of early morning dew on the grass. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from Blandy.

Did you know that growing houseplants can improve indoor air quality, reduce stress, and boost your sense of wellbeing? Learn tips and tricks to keep your houseplants happy and healthy from Blandy’s Assistant Curator for Herbaceous Gardens Carrie Whitacre. Pick out a new “plant pet” to take home at the end of the program.  

What to expect: An indoor program featuring practical tips on the care and keeping of houseplants. Plenty of time for questions!

ARBORETUM WALKING TOUR

2:00-3:30 | Sunday, November 13th 

Explore the Arboretum’s history and collections! Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. We will walk approximately 1.5 miles over gently rolling terrain.

What to expect: We will walk about a 1.5 miles over gently rolling terrain.

Who can come: This program is intended for an adult audience.

What to bring: Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a full water bottle. 

Where to meet: Meet at the flagpole at the front parking lot close to the “Arboretum Information” kiosk.

COVID-19 information: This program will be entirely outdoors. Masks are optional.

Snow Bird Walk

8:00 – 10:00 AM | Friday, November 18th

Our winter residents have come home to roost! Join Blandy director and birding enthusiast Dr. Dave Carr in search of Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, Northern Harriers, and others. 

What to expect: We will walk about a mile over gently rolling terrain.

Who can come: This program is designed for adults and children aged 12 and up.

What to bring: Dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking shoes that can withstand a bit of early morning dew on the grass. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from Blandy.
