Thousands of visitors (including equestrians!) come to Blandy each Fall to bask in the golden glow of the Ginkgo Grove. You may be surprised by how busy the grounds are in October-November compared to other times of year!
Here are a few special considerations for equestrians visiting Blandy during the fall Ginkgo season.
Planning your visit:
- Take a moment to read over the general expectations for Bridle Trail users.
- Be thoughtful about when you choose to visit. The grounds are the least crowded on weekdays and early mornings. Riders can enjoy a more serene experience by visiting during these times.
- Be realistic about your horse’s limits. Expect large numbers of cars, utility vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians (including children), strollers, wagons, dogs, etc. Visiting in late October/early November could be stressful for a horse who has not been tested in busy environments.
Arrival and parking:
- Avoid congestion at the front entrance on Route 50 by entering Blandy with your trailer from the designated entrance on Berry’s Ferry Road (link to map).
- Horse trailers may only park in the bridle trail paddock. If the paddock is full, no alternative parking is available for trailers.
During your ride:
- Stay on the Bridle Trail.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Horses are not allowed in the Ginkgo Grove.
- Carriages should follow vehicular directions. Please do not drive through or around roadblocks.
- Many ginkgo visitors may have limited experience around horses. Give visitors space, and speak up if you feel unsafe.
- Reach out to Blandy staff and volunteers if you have questions or concerns.
By making small adjustments to how you move through the property as an equestrian during “ginkgo season,” you can help protect this special landscape for all arboretum visitors.
