Carrie Whitacre
Assistant Curator, Herbaceous Gardens
Carrie is an experienced horticulturist with a strong background in public garden management, greenhouse production, and landscape maintenance. Her career spans municipal and institutional settings, where she designed and maintained educational gardens, presented educational programming, and led teams of staff and volunteers. She is passionate about connecting people with plants and the natural world through innovative educational programs, workshops, and community engagement.
As a Certified Arborist and Certified Heritage Interpreter, Carrie brings expertise in plant science, environmental education, and sustainable resource management. Her academic foundation includes Master of Science degrees in Parks & Resource Management and Environmental Education from Slippery Rock University, along with a Bachelor’s in Horticulture from Virginia Tech.
Carrie thrives on creating spaces and experiences that inspire environmental stewardship and appreciation for the natural world. Whether through hands-on instruction, public events, or caring for educational gardens her goal is to make horticulture accessible and meaningful for all.
