Blandy is less than 5 miles from the Shenandoah River, the largest river in the Shenandoah Valley. Students have the opportunity to go on an all-day canoe trip during one of the first weekends of the program.
The Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains are right next door. Blandy is less than 10 miles from the Appalachian Trail, the 2,000 mile walking trail that runs from Georgia to Maine. Students take a group hike during orientation week.
The summer also includes a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. With metropolitan Washington, D.C. 70 miles away, students often explore the life of the city.
Each summer, Dr. David Carr takes students who are willing to wake up in the wee hours of the morning on an excursion to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean to go birding.
Students enjoy exlploring more eccentric local attractions as well.
