A carpet of yellow cheer awaits you!

The winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) has emerged from the cold ground, letting us know spring is on the way despite a snowy, cold forecast.

A native of Europe, this small but mighty bulb is happy growing in rich, well-drained soil. Their bright yellow flowers only open when the sun is shining, so do not expect to see them in full bloom on cloudy days. When in bloom, you will often see honeybees foraging for nectar and pollen.

To see aconite at the arboretum, walk east down Dogwood Lane from the Quarters building and look left into the grassy area.
