Blandy K-12- Recommended Reading
A carpet of yellow cheer awaits you!
The winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) has emerged from the cold ground, letting us know spring is on the way despite a snowy, cold forecast.
A native of Europe, this small but mighty bulb is happy growing in rich, well-drained soil. Their bright yellow flowers only open when the sun is shining, so do not expect to see them in full bloom on cloudy days. When in bloom, you will often see honeybees foraging for nectar and pollen.
To see aconite at the arboretum, walk east down Dogwood Lane from the Quarters building and look left into the grassy area.
Spring Programs
Our spring programs include wildflower identification walks, a full moon walk, stargazing with the Shenandoah Astronomical Society, and more. Check out the entire schedule now!

2020 a good year for birders
A lot of us would like to forget 2020 entirely. But for birders, the year featured some memorable sightings. Birders spotted several rare or unusual birds at Blandy, including the beautiful ring-necked pheasant pictured here. Read the article by Blandy Director Dave Carr here.
We are the champions!
At the end of 2020, the State Arboretum of Virginia counted 29 Virginia State Champion trees among its collection, and eight more were in the top three. You can search the arboretum database at https://blandy.virginia.edu/find-our-trees and selecting State Champions Only. The Virginia Big Tree Registry is maintained by Virginia Tech.
